| » Third place at Quelle Challenge Roth (06/07/2006) |
Hi everybody,
Well I had the best day of my career to date last Sunday in Germany at Quelle Challenge Roth. This ironman-distance race is truly the best race on the globe. I had so much fun!
We started early on Sunday morning. Among us was the current world champion, Faris al-Sultan, and 2 time defending champion, Chris McCormack. After the exciting start, a small group of us quickly took the lead in the swim. Unfortunately the lead kayak directed us around a wrong buoy which cost us the lead to Faris al-Saltan who swam out of the water first. I came out in fourth.
On the bike after 40km Macca and I took the lead and stretched it out to a minute 10 over Faris. By the 110km mark, he had closed the gap and was back with us. I had a PB of 4 hours and 21 minutes which was 2 minutes quicker than our incredible ride last year. Things were looking good.
I ran onto the course in first place with Faris not far behind and he took over me at the 5km mark. Macca had had a flat on the bike but he ran up to me and then went onto to run down Faris.
I clicked my watch and had a plan to stay to a certain time which worked to perfection. With another PB, I ran into the finish stadium in 3rd place with the crowd going wild. It was so emotional and it's hard to describe the feeling.
Thanks to the Quelle Challenge Roth team for a special day and also thanks to all my sponsors and supporters who have pushed me to achieve this result.
This was a huge step forward for me and confidence boost over the ironman distance.
I am now having a week of nothing in the Greek Islands (ah bliss) before training starts again in San Diego. I will be in touch soon with another update.
Talk soon,
