IRONMAN - Head Strong
If his dreadlocks don’t catch your eye, his all-guns-blazing attitude soon will. Kieran Doe may be a relative novice in ironman but he’s fast becoming a master of the sport, as Jamie Troughton discovers.
The weight of Kieran Doe’s road bike is measured to the nearest gram and every scrap of clothing he wears screams sleek and efficient.
He agonises over his body weight, scrupulously watching his dietary intake.
An ironman athlete racing head-long for 226km through water, over road and pavement can’t afford to be carrying anything extra.
That’s why the bemusing thing about Doe, a 24-year-old rookie in triathlon’s big day out, is the 2kg of follicles he carries bunched up on his cranium – a dead weight of dreadlocks, as heavy a head of tresses as you’re bound to find.
The slightly daggy locks provide a stark contrast to the rest of his finely tuned 68kg frame, complete with a strong jaw and chiselled features. |
