| » Ironman NZ Disappointing Times! (08/04/2006) |
Sorry for the delay in this update but read on and you will understand why!
Unfortunately Ironman NZ 06 was not meant to be for me! Due to the terrible weather conditions and after much deliberation with us elites, the race directors made the call to can the swim from race day (we have photo evidence of people surfing Lake Taupo!) with the bike and run legs shortened by half their normal distance.
It was a tough decision and many were unhappy about it, as this was not the race that had been trained hard for by many!
With an hour to go before the start, I was in transition sorting out a few last minute things (I was eager to get going!) and lo and behold a stilted speaker blew over in the strong wind and landed on my head. Thank goodness I have dreads to dull the impact! After the initial “what the…!!”, I was instructed to head off to the medics who gave me the ok. Thankfully I wasn’t concussed (or so I thought), and I was now more than ever ready to race!
The race began in time trial fashion ( I was ranked 4th so started 2 minutes behind Cameron Brown) and as I was pushing hard I found I was narrowing the gaps my leaders had. Just as I had passed 3rd seed one of my aero bars came loose and fell into my spokes! It was a freak accident that occurred due to the strength I had to use to hold onto my bars as I rode into the wind- it was that windy!
So with a mechanical failure I sat and waited on the side of the road. Two marshals pulled over and we discussed my disposition as someone drove past and noted that I had been pinged for draughting which was then reported to Ironmanlive.com. This was not so, and I am angry that this was incorrectly reported as I am against the notion of draughting entirely.
After a week off, I resumed training – BUT something wasn’t right. I was feeling tired, heavy, nauseous, was suffering from headaches and I was unable to train properly. After a trip to the doc I was diagnosed with severe post concussion syndrome. I’ve been told I can train lightly and build slowly as I feel better.
I have another doctor’s appointment in two weeks to see if there is any improvement but apart from that, time is my only medicine.
Onwards and upwards my plan was to have my first race on the 30th of April in the USA and then another on the 6th of May. I’m due to leave New Zealand on the 26th of April, but my doctor, coaches and I have decided that I will not race these first two races. If I get a clearance in two weeks, I’ll stick to the plan and leave on the 26th of April to train and live in San Diego and build up for Quelle Challenge Roth (ironman-distance) on July 2nd in Germany.
Thank you all for your continued support and I’ll be in touch soon to keep you all up-to-date.
Talk soon,
Doeboy
