» Half hopeful runs away with Tinman title (07/12/2005)

BAY OF PLENTY TIMES

By JAMIE TROUGHTON
Tauranga's first triathlon of the summer attracted a strong field yesterday but Kieran Doe ensured the gun racers were only going to be salvaging minor placings.

Doe blitzed the CentralMed Tinman, which attracted more than 600 competitors, as he won by nearly 5mins and boosted his preparations for an assault on the Port of Tauranga half ironman.

The dreadlocked 24-year-old opened a big gap over Auckland's Tristian Calwell on the cycle and never relinquished his lead throughout the 1500m swim, 40km cycle and 10km race.

Doe finished in 1hr 51min 57secs, with Calwell second in 1:56.32, while former Tauranga athlete Blair Jordan stormed home into third in a respectable 1:58.28.

"It wasn't too bad, considering it was my first Olympic distance race since the world champs in 2003," Doe said.

"The time was irrelevant _ I've been training pretty hard for the last couple of weeks and I was pretty tired coming into it. I just wanted to see where I'm at with the half only five weeks away."

Doe led out of the water despite a hiccup heading out for his second loop in Pilot Bay, where he made a wrong turn and lost vital seconds.

But he was quickly into his work on the cycle, picking up at least a minute on the chasing pack on each of the four 10km laps. By the time he got off his bike, he was 5min 46secs ahead of Calwell and he cruised home on the run.

Doe credited a new bike for much of his dominance, having recently switched from a Cervélo soloist to a specialist time-trial Cervélo P3 Carbon.

"It's only my second ride on it with a new set-up and I wasn't sure how I'd feel. But it was incredible. It was so smooth and it's the fastest bike I've ever ridden."

He's also made changes to his diet, trying to get leaner for the half ironman, where he was second last year behind Australian Craig Alexander and is rapidly building a cult following.

This was his first crack at the Tinman but he also wants to race the Surfbreaker sprint triathlon on December 27 before the half.

Jordan, meanwhile, is also building up to the half ironman, and relished the chance to be back racing on home turf after shifting to Auckland earlier this year.

"I love that course, especially that run around the Mount," Jordan said. "Everyone else is coming down to do training weekends because they hate it and want to get used to it but I've grown up running it."

Jordan made up good time on the bike, picking up five spots, but had no answer to Doe's dominance.

"I knew they were going to have a big lead on me in the swim but every lap on the bike Kieran was just making distance each time."

Ben Visser took out the inaugural sprint-distance component of the Tinman, leading home Mark Fulford, while Tauranga's Tracey Steens won the women's sprint.
