» 70.3 Vineman (18/07/2010)
Great start to USA trip.

With an early start getting up at 4am and a big thanks to Mirinda Carfrae for the ride to and from the race and congrats on her great win and course record today.

I woke feeling fresh and good and even better once I had two coffees down me, the morning was pretty cool with lots of fog cover.
The race started at 630 AM and at about 6am we were told it would be non- wetsuit, bugger only .1 over the limit and I didn't bring a speed suit with me swimming- in a river with no buoyancy this was going to be tough.
The gun went and I found my self in unfamiliar territory behind 6 people, I couldn't find any rhythm and felt like I was sinking I tried to stay relaxed and not panic and soon started to make my way forward and find rhythm but by that stage kiwi Graham O'Grady was off in the distance, I swam with a group 4 until the end coming out 1min down on Graham but with urber cyclist Chris Leito beside me not my pre race plan.

Onto the bike and the hammer was down with Chris powering to the front and my watts up over 400 for most of the first 15km but I felt smooth and still in control with the pack of 4 soon down to myself and Chris we eventually caught Graham around 35km and by 45km it was just Chris and myself I was starting to feel the bite at 70km and after a long powering turn by Chris in the front I decided to back off a little so I could still run eventually coming in 3min30 down on Leito.

Once onto the run I found a good rhythm quick and settled in over the tough rolling hills turning at half way I had lost a further 1min to Chris but the guys behind were still 4mins down I worked hard on the way home and felt strong, running home 1min quicker than the first half to finish 2nd, silver lining is the 1.5L Pinot noir from La Crema vineyard in the russian valley, Santa Rosa that we received.

Congratulations to Chris and fellow Kiwi athlete Jamie Whyte for his great top five finish and all the competitors today.

A big thank you to the supporters, race organinsers and volunteers from Santa Rosa, you continue to make Vineman 70.3 a huge success and such an enjoyable event to be part of.

Now off to Penticton for a good week of training before the next stop Calgary 70.3.

Cheers
