Steelhead 70.3.

Today I was back racing at the Benton Harbor Lake Michigan Steelhead
70.3.
On returning to NZ from Korea and Japan I have put in some solid training and was looking forward to racing again. I arrived in the USA in the early hours of Wednesday after 30 hours of travel.
By race morning I was starting to feel ok the body clock was still a little out of sync but I was ready to race.

The race kicked of at 7am with a gentle breeze, mild temperatures and a solid pro field of 40 athletes with former 70.3 world champion and arguably the best at this distance in the world heading the field in Andy Potts.
I got of to a great start swimming side by side with Andy Potts and John Kenny it was a fast pace that was being set and it was very hard to see anything as we were swimming into the rising sun.
John Kenny managed to make a break on myself and Andy out to the left exiting the water in 21.10 with myself and Andy 45sec back but we had split the rest of the field.
Once on the bike I took the lead early but I never felt comfortable and struggled to find rhythm all day, myself and Andy continued to share the lead until the 50km mark when we were passed by Andrew Starykowicz who had a storming bike ride to eventually lead myself and Andy of the bike by 5min.
I struggled early on in the run and stayed with Andy for the first few km
but could not match his pace, I started to find a nice rhythm at around the 10km mark and ran strong until the end but could not catch Andrew Starykowicz.

I achieved the main goal today in gaining a 70.3 world champs slot as i build toward that race in Nov.

Cheers Doe boy
