Hi all,
Well it’s been Three weeks since race day and I'm just starting to feel like my legs could handle some gd training again. I was a bit quite on the update front before IM but it was a great build up everything went well and I laid down some great work in those last 4-5 weeks.
1 week out from IM I raced the national series race in Napier as a last blow out, I felt I was hitting my taper bang on as I felt great and in control all day to take a win.
My last week taper went fast heading to Taupo on wed and doing some media and sponsor commitments on Thursday and Friday. There had been a lot of media around both Cameron and myself leading into the race but there was also a handful of other top contender’s to watch out for.
I was confident within myself that I had done the work and was in good enough shape that if I had a great day I could challenge for the win.
RACE DAY
We woke to a great morning not a breath of wind or hint of the weather to come, I had a good warm up until I broke into a sweat and then prepared to put my wetsuit on as I listened to the Whakas in the back ground as shivers run down my spin and I absorbed the moment, it was here after weeks of focus and hard yards and it was now time to unleash it all.....
The three lights started to flash 3mins to go , two lights- 2mins to go ,1 light 1min to go we all get edgy starting to push and pull second by second some creep further forward the heart beats faster and faster and you have a sick feeling inside then BANG..... The canon fires we are off all the nerves are gone and its time to race!
After a great swim and leading out a gap of 25secs , I worked hard on the bike to try and open up a bigger gap over the likes of Luke bell and Cam brown. For the first 135km the gap stayed at around the 2min mark, I struggled to find my rhythm and power to extend it until the last 45km when I finally started to feel strong.
My lead went from 2min to 3min then 4min up to 7min 30 by the end I would have liked a bigger lead over Brown but it wasn't to be.
I run my first 10km in sub 40min trying to keep Cam at bay but the master still managed to take 3min out of my lead, my middle 22km I suffered a lot but through the support of my friends and family and all the crowd I pushed through and
found some rhythm in my last 10km to finish strong and in 3rd place.
I had mixed emotions about the end result – I will always want to win and still believe I was in the best shape to do this. This was not to be in what I would have to say was my hardest race ever, I had to fight so many obstacles to come back strong and finish. Although I didn’t get the podium result I wanted I gained so much more in my own personal mental and physical growth from this third placing than ever before.
I can't thank all my friends, family, supporters and sponsors enough.
I would also like to thank Jane, her team, the volunteers and the Taupo community for yet another great IM NZ.
To the two NZ Champs:
Cam what a performance and an incredible athlete you are, it is great to see you back at your best. Jo you got the tough race you wanted and came out the other side as the
champion you are and an inspiration to watch.
I now can't wait to return next year and try to stop Mr Brown.
Cheers Doeboy |
