More than a thousand athletes took to the water in this year’s Port of Tauranga Half-Ironman an event which doubles as the National Triathlon Championships.
Kiwi Kieran Doe took charge on the 90 kilometre cycle, with the Ironman Canada champion finishing nearly four minutes ahead his nearest rival.
Cameron Brown was eight minutes behind heading into the 21km run leg and the eight time champion immediately set about changing that.
But he fell short and it was Doe who clinched victory - Brown running home less than 2 minutes later.
Disappointment for one favourites in the women's race Australian Ironman champion Rebekah Keat forced to pull out with a puncture.
That opened the way for defending champion Jo Lawn.
But it was another Aussie Kate Bevilaqua who surprised everyone running home just ten seconds ahead of an exhausted lawn.
The athletes will now begin preparations for the New Zealand Ironman in March.
