| » Port of Tauranga Half Ironman, Saturday January 5, 2008 (08/01/2008) |
Hi all
What a way to start the year - it’s taken six long years and a lot of pain, but I finally did it!
My win in the Port of Tauranga Half Ironman was a sweet, sweet feeling because it’s one race I’ve been chasing hard for a long time.
To do it in front of so many friends, family and supporters made it even better and it’s given me another big boost of confidence after Ironman Canada.
The race – well, what can you say. Everything seemed to go to plan. I was second out of the water behind Stephen Sheldrake and caught him on the first lap of the bike. I just concentrated on a good rhythm and a high cadence and keeping nice and aero, and I knew I was riding well when I started putting minutes into Stephen, because he’s been beating top cyclists in some of the races he’s been doing lately.
I knew I had to get a good lead for the run with eight-time champ Cameron Brown behind me and in the end, I had around seven minutes on him.
My transition was great and I set off knowing I just had to stay strong and keep a good rhythm for the next 21km.
Cameron came back at me as I knew he would - we passed each other on Marine Parade the final time and he was moving and I was hurting.
Going around the Mount for the last time, I didn’t know where he was so I just ran as hard as I could. I couldn’t see him coming into Pilot Bay but I still didn’t ease off until I got to the last 100m or so.
I was running scared and I had nothing left - I just didn’t want to get second again! Third would have been better than second, so I waited right until the end before celebrating!
The crowd was amazing – and that’s why I love coming to this place. It always feels like everyone’s behind me and it definitely carried me to the finish.
My time was 3:56:41, and my 2:08:13 bike leg was more than a minute quicker than the best team rider, which justified all those hours building strength and punishing myself on the bike.
I’ve now got about eight weeks until Ironman New Zealand, so I don’t get much time to celebrate. Just a few days rest, and then straight back into it!
Thanks for all your support
