The New Zealand Ironman triathlete Kieran Doe says he picked a good year to win his first big title -- it was the 25th anniversary of Ironman Canada.

The 26-year-old Aucklander led from the start in British Columbia in his first race since crashing into another cyclist during a triathlon in Mount Maunganui in December.

He says niggling injuries from the crash affected his early training but the last two months went according to plan.

There's no enough time to recover for Ironman Hawaii in October and Doe's next big event is the world long-distance championships in Texas in December.

Meanwhile the former Christchurch triathlete Chris McDonald won the inaugural Ironman Louisville in Kentucky by more than six minutes and Wellington's Vicky Jones, a former Ironman age group world champion, finished sixth in the women's elite field.
