Doe scores maiden multisport win in Canada
28/08/2007NZPANew Zealand multisport athlete Kieran Doe scored his breakthrough win when he dominated a top class field in Ironman Canada on Monday.
Doe, 26, won the event held at Penticon, British Columbia, in a time of eight hours, 32 minutes 45 seconds.
He lead from start to finish after coming out of the water in the 3.86km swim leg over two minutes in front.
He made good on a pre-race promise to play to his swimming and riding strengths when he pushed the pace on the 180.24km cycle leg to lead by nearly 14 minutes by the halfway mark.
That was more than enough for Doe to protect his position on the 42.16km run.
"I just stayed focused the whole way," Doe said.
"My whole plan was to be mentally prepared to be out there for eight and a half hours on my own.
"It's always tough to be the frontrunner, but running a three-hour marathon (Doe's run split was 3hrs 02min 06sec) puts the pressure on the other guys, and I ran the first half pretty fast."
Finishing second in 8hrs 39min 59sec was Canadian Jonathon Caron with fellow countryman Chris Brown next in 8hrs 49min 34sec.
