When Penticton, B.C. hosted the first Ironman event 25 years ago Kieran Doe was just learning how to walk. On Sunday the 26-year-old triathelete from Auckland, New Zealand proved he could run, as he crossed the finish line at 8:32.45 to win the Subaru 25th Ironman Canada title.

For Doe it was also his first Ironman victory. Doe was the first out of the water at Lake Okanagan completing the 3.8-kilometre course in just 48.50. Once he got on the bike he just continued to gain ground as he finished the 180-km bike in 4:38.24. By this point he had a 13-minute gap on Jonathan Caron who finished second overall. Third place went to Chris Brown of Calgary, Alta.

On the women’s side Lisa Bentley let the world know she was back with her 11th Ironman win. It was also her third Ironman Canada title. Bentley, 38, was seven minutes behind Linda Gallo, 30, after the bike but made up ground on the run. She overtook first place at the 17-kilometre mark and didn’t look back.

The victory was special for Bentley who has battled injury this past year. She didn’t return to training until mid-June when she began racing again.

Sara Gross from Calgary, Alta. finished second in the women’s division with a time of 9:43.34. Third place went to Heather Fuhr from Encinitas, California, with a time of 9:49.36.

This year’s event had over 2,700 athletes making it the largest Ironman Penticton has hosted.
