Chris McCormack to join the team at Challenge Queenstown
28 August 2006
The 3 time Quelle Challenge Roth Champion confirmed today that he will travel to Queenstown in January 2007 and compete in a team at the inaugural Challenge Queenstown Triathlon.
McCormack - affectionately known as 'Macca' - is one of the fiercest forces competing in triathlon today. He took on what was arguably the best possible field in the world to win the 1997 World Triathlon Championships and has since dominated the sport over every distance.
McCormack has been 'Sub-8' (under 8 hours) over the Ironman distance, and at last count has won over 130 triathlons around the world.
"It will be great to have Macca in Queenstown competing in the team, and he is looking forward to spending a couple of hours awarding finishers medals at the finish line", confirmed event director Matt Tuck. "Macca has such a great relationship with Challenge Roth, and his energy and enthusiasm are contagious. He will add another dimension to the event, and Kiwi's will relish the opportunity to see a champion like Chris competing here in New Zealand".
McCormack has recently taken over the coaching of Kiwi Pro-Male Kieran Doe. Doe is currently the favourite to take out Challenge Queenstown in 2007, although the race organisers have promised there are still plenty more professional signings to announce.
This is extra motivation for McCormack, who will make the journey to Queenstown with his wife to watch Doe race.
"Expect big things in the future from this kid", says Macca. "With some time and some balance, he is the future of the sport".
A steady stream of entries have been received to date, with the international contingent growing daily. For more information on Challenge Queenstown, please visit www.challenge-queenstown.com
